17 Awesome Indoor Garden Ideas For Your Home

Are you searching for the best indoor garden ideas? Let me tell you that just because you don’t have enough outdoor space for a garden, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy all the benefits of an indoor garden.

That’s why I wanted to put together this article. I’ve recently done a lot of research on this topic and I want to share with you the ideas that I believe will spark your creativity and passion.

How To Grow Indoor Garden Easily?

If you want to have an indoor garden easily and effortlessly, I suggest taking a look at an outdoor/indoor garden tower that is designed specifically for small places.

If you want to know more about this solution, read my Garden Tower 2 review.

Indoor gardens can be simple or complex, involved or low-maintenance (especially with the solutions I mentioned above). The indoor garden ideas I’ve selected here truly show how much variety is possible with an indoor garden. Express yourself!

Use Simple Plants In Pots

A Gorgeous Combo

Tall indoor plant pots

I love the way these potted plants leave no space empty! Beautiful lilies are combined with dashes of white and green and even trailing leaves down the side of the pot.

I think that tall potted plants like these make a statement and bunching plants together means you’ll have fewer pots to water, which is always a plus in my book.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Moderate to High since caring for lilies indoors might be challenging plus some experience with plant arrangement is requiredModerate to HighHigh since lilies need a good amount of bright, indirect lightModerate since some room required due to the height and the trailing leaves

Fresh, Green, And Simple

Palm indoor plant in the living room

This indoor gardening idea shows what can be done with hardy, low-maintenance houseplants. Go for something like a fern or a palm, as we see here. I suggest giving plenty of room for the leaves to grow for a fresh look and feel to your home.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Low since palms are low-maintenanceLow to Moderate depending on the size of the plant and the type of planter usedModerate to High since palms can lower light conditionsModerate to High depending on the plant’s size

Herbs For The Kitchen

Herbs in multiple planters near the window

You can fit lots of different herbs into one large planter.

If you want, I highly recommend getting one that hangs out your kitchen window. This means fresh herbs whenever you’re cooking! Not only does it look fantastic, it has a practical use, too. No more dried herbs in your pasta.

If you do not know where to start, you can start with mint. It’s very easy to grow mint in your kitchen, either from cutting or from seeds. Or you can grow garlic indoors.

You can also check my indoor garden ideas with fresh herbs in pictures for inspiration.

You can also grow mushrooms at home – check this post to find out how to grow portobellas indoors.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Low to Moderate depending on the herbs (mint is the easiest to grow)Low since seeds or hrb cuttings are inexpensiveHigh since herbs need a lot of lightLow to Moderate since it can be grown on a windowsill or hanging outside a window

Short On Space? Go Mini!

Use Jars As Planters

Jars used as planters for indoor plants

If you can find the right plants to grow in a small space, inventive methods can give an unusual look. Check out these jars full of greenery! Don’t they look fantastic?

I think that this can be a great way to spruce up a small space, but also a fun project for kids and adults alike, making it one of the most creative indoor garden ideas all around.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Low to Moderate since the right plants must be chosen and maintenance might be challengingLow if using existing jars or ones from thrift stores plus small plants or seeds are inexpensiveModerate to Bright depending on the plantsLow since jars take up very little space

Include Fish!

An aquarium cum pot table with underwater plants

This clever indoor garden design creates a rustic space for some goldfish, as well as lush green potted plants. I believe that this 2-in-1 feature is absolutely beautiful. I love the way the water is set up to trickle down! I can just imagine the peaceful sound of this water indoor garden.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace

Go For A Succulent Planter

Succulents in a wide planter

This is another similar planter with a lot of succulents and cacti planted in one large pot. The different varieties of tropical plants make for a nice dash of color among the green.

Pro tip: If you plan to re-use an old pot, make sure to properly sterilize them to kill harmful germs and other bad things for tropical plants. Here’s how you can do it without bleach.

This rainbow planter truly does give something to talk about with your guests, in my opinion. Just look at all that variety in one mini indoor garden!

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Low to Moderate since succulents are low-maintenanceLow to Moderate depending on the varieties and sizes of the succulentsBright since succulents need a lot of lightLow to Moderate since succulents can be small

A Home For The Fairies

Go For Detail

Mini fairy tale indoor garden

Look how much incredible detail is included here. This may be quite a project, but if you are artistic, you could create a stunning indoor gardening design like this one. This fairy has a magical house, all within one improvised planter. Real mini plants and moss give a realistic feel to this indoor garden design, too, in my opinion.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
High since it requires creativity and artistic skillsModerate to High depending on the materialsLow to ModerateSmall to Moderate since the garden can be small

Create A Vertical Garden On Shelves

Use Shelves To Provide Light

Indoor wall planters with lights

These planters are a good example of how you could use shelving to create a lit area. By using the bottom of one shelf for mounting lights or heat lamps, you can open up the possibility of growing plants that need more light. Also, I think that it’s another way to brighten the room and draw attention to what you’re growing.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Moderate to High due to technical requirements for lightModerate to High to accommodate budget for lightingLow since the lights are built-inModerate since there should be enough clearance to install and operate the lights

Mounted On Wood

Wall mounted indoor planters with different herbs and other plants

Another unusual indoor garden design, but one I really love. Plus, after making this at home, I noticed that it doesn’t take up a lot of space at all. These small planters are attached to wood which is hanging against the wall, so no floor space gets used. You can mount the planters in any pattern you choose, too.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Moderate since it equires some DIY skillsLow to Moderate since re-purposing materials can reduce costsVaries depending on the chosen plantsLow due to the vertical design

Vertical Wall Indoor Gardens

Bottle It Up

Hanging planters made out of recycleld bottles

This is simple and comes from a list of low-cost indoor garden ideas. What a great way to use your old bottles and a fun project! I recommend doing this with your kids. It’ll teach them something about crafts, recycling, and a bit about indoor gardening, too! I think that these planters are also perfect for a porch, especially with all the natural light shining upon them.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Easy since it’s a great DIY project for beginnersLow due to utilization of recycled materialsVaries depending on the plantsLow due to the vertical nature of the design

The Wall Of Green

An indoor wall of plants

I didn’t say all my indoor garden ideas would be easy! A lot of work has gone into this, but I think that it is truly breathtaking. It’s like a slice of the jungle in your own home — with greenery from floor to ceiling. If you have the expertise, an indoor gardening design like this can wow your friends.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
High since it requires a lot of plant care knowledge, expertise, and maintenanceHigh since it requires a significant investment in plants and planting materialsHigh since this type of indoor garden needs plenty of lightHigh since it is designed to cover an entire wall

Modern Boxes

Box-shaped indoor planters installed on the wall

These planters are uniform, box-shaped, and connected by a modern metal structure that looks a bit like modern art, in my opinion. I would expect this kind of indoor garden design to look good in a fancy office building, but this idea isn’t reserved for Silicon Valley. You can use this vertical indoor gardening design to make the most of the wall space in your home.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Low to Moderate since some skills are required to attach it to the wallModerate to High since the structure might not be easy to obtainVaries depending on the plantsLow to Moderate depending on the number of planters

Use A Crate… Or A Few!

Crates used as shelves for indoor planters

Here’s a really creative use of a crate! The crates have been turned into shelves for the planter by turning it on its side. As you can see, you could stack multiple crates against the wall and make a large area for planting whatever you please. I love the rustic charm of this one and the fact it reuses materials. This is certainly one of the best DIY sustainable indoor garden ideas, in my opinion.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Low to Moderate depending on whether you’re re-purposing old crates or notLow since crates are inexpensive or can be reusedVaries depending on the plantsLow to Moderate depending on the number of the crates

Plant Some Vegetables

Vegetable garden shelves near the window

Many vegetables, like potatoes and pepper plants, do well indoors and this is a great example of using a part of the kitchen that’s full of natural light to get your indoor garden ideas started. Once they start to sprout and grow, you’ll get a real feeling of spring in the air — plus I think that they are very useful!

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Low to Moderate depending on particular vegetablesModerate since seedlings or seeds can be priceyHigh since most vegetables need plenty of sunlightModerate to High since vegetables often require more space than typical houseplants

Designate A Small Garden Room

A Space Under The Stairs

Big indoor plants near the stairs in metal planters

This is one of the more modern indoor garden ideas I decided to include on this list. I think it’s one of the best ways to include some greenery in an ultramodern house without too much difficulty. All that space means you can use big, statement houseplants to bring a feeling of nature to a modern living space.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Easy with enough space and large plantersModerate to High because large plants and planters can be expensiveVaries depending on the plantsHigh since this idea requires big plants and planters

A Huge Slice Of The Outdoors

Indoor trees for a rustic living room

If you’re lucky enough to have this much natural light pouring into one of your rooms, there is so much you can plant. Here, we even see trees that are surviving perfectly well indoors. I believe that this is a great way to stay in touch with nature and get both the benefits of the outdoors and the indoors.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace
Moderate to High since caring for indoor trees requires knowledgeHigh due to high cost of indoor trees and large potsHigh since trees generally require a lot of light to growVery High due to the large size of indoor trees

Beach House Paradise

Central area for an indoor garden

If you’re lucky enough to have a pool house or beach house, why don’t you include a central area such as this where you can plant whatever you please? I think that this is striking to look at and works so well with the open-plan design of the house.

DifficultyBudgetLightSpace

  1. I love these ideas. I have an enclosed porch that I am going to try and use your list to fill it with plants. I’m hoping to fill it with house plants (I’m an addict) and vegetables and herbs.
