Buyer’s Guide: How To Buy The Best Snow Blower For Elderly People

An aged man operating a snow blower

Buying a snowblower can be intimidating for anybody, especially those who are not in tune with the latest technology in the outdoor equipment industry. There are just so many types and brands to choose from. Which one you pick depends on:

  • How much snow you get in your area
  • How large of an area you are clearing
  • Your personal preferences and needs

Picking the best snow blower for seniors is much easier when you know what features to look for and when to buy a snowblower. Lucky for you, I have created an extensive buyer’s guide that will give you some confidence.

Here are some of the features you should look for in a snow blower for aged users:

Clearance Capacity

An important feature you should pay close attention to is clearance capacity. It either makes a snowblower great or useless. The clearance capacity of a snowblower lets you know how wide and deep the unit cuts through the snow

You should find a snow blower with the best clearance capacity you can afford. The more snow your machine can clear at a time, the faster you will be inside, cozying up next to a fireplace.

Let’s divide clearance capacity into two categories:

Clearance Width

Clearance width tells you how wide of a path the unit makes on a single pass. Choosing a snowblower with a clearance of at least 18 inches has many advantages. I have made sure to review snow blowers that meet this requirement.

The wider the auger is, the less time you will spend in the freezing cold. You will clear your sidewalk and driveway in just a few passes. The Greenworks Pro 2601302  clears 20 inches in a single pass making it an ideal accessory for bigger properties.

But what good is a wide clearance when you don’t know how to utilize it? Click here to learn how to use a snowblower safely and efficiently

Intake Height

The intake height tells you the maximum snowfall height the unit can handle.

I recommend you pick a snow blower with an intake height that’s a couple of inches higher than the typical snowfall you get in your area. This way your blower won’t clog as easily

All of the snowblowers on my review list can handle up to 10 inches of snowfall, including the Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB18 . To clear snow higher than this, you will have to make multiple passes.

Weight

Let’s face it. It is only natural for us to lose some body strength as we get older. Many adults would prefer to own a small, compact, and lightweight snow blower over a bulky machine that weighs a ton.

A bulky snowblower will quickly drain your energy, especially if the unit is not self-propelling. There are plenty of lightweight snow blowers on the market that still have good traction and performance

I’ve made sure to include a diverse selection of lightweight snow blowers on my review list. The lightest one is the Greenworks Pro 2601302 , weighing only 30 lbs (batteries excluded). The “heaviest” of the bunch is the Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB18 , standing at 40 lbs

These snow blowers are lightweight and can be used by men or women, but you can find more snow blowers that are great for women right here!

Reliability

One thing is for sure, we all want a reliable snowblower, regardless of our age. It is pretty frustrating seeing your driveway slowly disappear under a thick blanket of snow, and your snowblower just won’t start

I had this in mind when picking the best snowblowers for elderly users. That is why I only included electric corded and cordless units on my list.

Corded and battery-powered snow blowers are more reliable than gas-powered units. Gas engines often fail to start after the summer because of a clogged carburetor or busted spark plug. Electric motors, on the other hand, don’t have these maintenance issues.

I do however suggest you keep the batteries of your cordless snowblower  in a dry, warm place. This way, they will operate without any hiccups. If you forget to do this, and the battery doesn’t start immediately, take it indoors and allow it to warm up for 10 minutes. That should do it.

Having a corded electric machine, like the Snow Joe SJ623E , may be even easier. You won’t have to keep up with recharging. You simply plug the blower in an outlet, and you are good to go. You will have an unlimited run time, but your reach will be restricted by the length of your outdoor extension cord

Less Maintenance

An engine oil being poured out from its plastic container

Most of us don’t like the idea of having to take care of a snowblower before we use it. This includes draining the system, changing the oil, checking for gas leakage, cleaning the carburetor, switching an old spark plug for a new one, and much more.

All of these tune-ups can be avoided by simply buying a cordless snow blower, like the Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB18 . It requires less maintenance than any gas snowblower. Your main responsibility is to keep the batteries indoors during winter and charge them when they run out.

Charging the battery is simple. Insert it in the included charger and plug the whole thing directly into an electrical outlet. The rapid charging Greenworks Pro 2601302  80V 2AH lithium-ion battery only takes 30 minutes

Storage

As years go by, we tend to accumulate more things in our garage and storage shed. If this is the case for you, then you should look for a snowblower that is easy to store.

Having a storage-friendly snowblower that won’t be in your way for the better part of the year is a big plus. Good news, all the units in my review list are easy to store, the Greenworks Pro 2601302  especially. It has a foldable handle for easy storage in the corner of your garage.

Cost And Warranty

The cost of a snowblower depends on the brand, type, size, and features. I have made sure to include snowblowers for all different budgets on my list

If you have an opportunity to splurge a bit, I recommend the Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB18 . It has everything you want in a snowblower. But if you are on a budget, look into corded electric throwers. I like the Snow Joe SJ623E . Corded blowers are typically cheaper than battery-powered units.

Price shouldn’t be the only determining factor for your purchase. Look at the warranty, as well. It will tell you how confident the manufacturer is in their product.

The Greenworks Pro 2601302  is the only one with a 4-year warranty against defects in parts, materials, and workmanship. Its battery and charger are covered by a 2-year warranty, like all the other snowblowers I reviewed.

The Best Snow Blower For Elderly People Is …

The best snow blower for elderly people is the one you feel most comfortable operating. A machine that you feel confident working with and safe to be around.

With that said, I still have to announce the best snow blower for seniors

The clear winner is the Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB18 . It clears wide and deep and it’s not too bulky or too heavy to operate. It is reliable and requires less maintenance, so it’s a win-win!

However, it might not be the best machine for wet snow. If the snow in your region tends to be wet most of the time, you might want to consider a snowblower that tackles it well.

The runner-up worth mentioning is the Snow Joe SJ623E , with an excellent clearance capacity, discharge, and even better price!
